Shiatsu is a form of natural healing that originated within the oldest healing method known to humanity - Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a method of restoring and maintaining health by adjusting and balancing the body's primary communication system - the energy system. This energy system directs all of our growth, body functions and activities as well as our awareness from the time of conception throughout our lives.
Shiatsu affects the movement of energy known as "Ki" or "Chi", which circulates through well defined passageways called meridians. A Shiatsu practitioner applies various degrees of pressure along these meridians and other specific areas of the body to balance the energy as it flows to the organs, glands, muscles, nerves, blood, and throughout the whole body. Additional stretching techniques, massage, and structural release support Shiatsu to achieve harmony within this energy system.
The Shiatsu practitioner makes use of the simplest and most basic tool of human beings: the hands. Use of the hands is one of the main qualities that make human beings unique. Through the dexterity of the thumb, which structurally marks a turning point in human biological evolution, man can bring forth the physical counterpart of his or her imagination and thoughts.
Touch is the essence of Shiatsu. A supportive hand in times of stress or injury will always assist recovery. Through the medium of touch, the experienced Shiatsu practitioner can activate innate self-healing mechanisms within the receiver, producing a heightened sense of well-being in body, mind and spirit.
Shiatsu connects us with something essential to life and is primary to the development of our health and happiness. It is an expression of making balance, the basic activity of nature and the body. It is acknowledging that making balance is common and essential to all life, and acknowledges that all humans and animals, as well as the vegetable world, the elemental world and the energy spheres, are related and interdependent.
