Cranio (Craniosacral) Basic Training PDF Print E-mail

Cranio (craniosacral) training is well suited for anyone who wants to become a professional Craniosacral-Therapist. As a prerequisite, 150 hours in medical basics are highly recommended. Our training is designed to address the unique needs of the individual student in career and personal development. Ones' goal may be to attain a professional level as a full or part-time practitioner, it may be to incorporate Craniosacral as a complement to existing skills or it may simply be for personal development. Craniosacral is a very good complement to existing skills in bodywork such as Shiatsu, Acupuncture, Physiotherapy, classical Massage or western Medicine because it blends very well with other healing methods.

What is Craniosacral Therapy and how does it work?

Image The origins of Craniosacral Therapy date from the early 1900's when William Garner Sutherland, D.O. discovered that the bones of the skull are mobile. Over a period of fifty years, he learned to feel the motion of the cranial bones, to perceive the effect of poor motion on the whole body from, and to help re-establish harmony in the body by manipulation of the bones and membranes. He discovered that the cause of the movement was the cerebrospinal fluid which, as we know today, is essential for maintenance of the nervous system. His clinical experience revealed that altering the relationships and pressure of the Craniosacral system did indeed have far-reaching effects within the client's nervous system and entire body. Then, six years before his death, he made a second discovery: he noticed a kind of energy generating corrections from within the client's body without external influence by the therapist. Similar to Chi and Prana, the contact with what he called the Breath of Life changed his entire treatment focus to one of spiritual reverence and subtle touch.

Craniosacral Therapy is extremely subtle and therefore applicable for people of all ages, especially children. Craniosacral Therapy is beneficial in realigning skull structure after birth during which the soft bones and membranes of the skull slightly overlap to enable the head to pass through the birth canal. Even an easy birth creates stress for a newborn, the effects of which can be addressed through Craniosacral Therapy.

The DIPLOMA Program

This roghly 1000-hours comprehensive certification program focuses on contact with the Breath of Life and its healing potential in the cerebrospinal fluid and whole body. Unique because of its somatic foundation, the teaching direction of this program is grounded in developing presence, contact and clarity of intention within the practitioner's own body and perception. Students will learn tools to contact the fluid dynamics with conscious awareness and mindfulness. These skills are necessary to facilitate a successful therapeutic outcome. Complementing this approach is considerable work with the current theories and practices of facilitating stress and trauma, and their effects on the nervous system and the whole person. Students will develop touch skills that identify and encourage the client's spiritual and emotional resources. The program has a profound potential to access the heart of the body's self-correcting wisdom and access healing through the fluid dynamics of the Primary Respiratory System.

Offered by the International School for Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (ISBC-Kiental), the program presents 10 levels, each of 5 days duration, completed over a period of 3 years. Classroom instruction consists of a core training in perception, mindfulness, living anatomy, active imagination, stress and trauma facilitation, and somatic psychology. Careful attention is given to the ethical limits of Craniosacral therapy, and the use of appropriate referral guidelines. The curriculum is designed by Franklyn Sills of the Karuna Institute in England, Michael Shea and Friedrich Wolf. This training program has been approved by the Craniosacral Therapy Association of Switzerland (SBCT).

Teachers:

Wolf Friedrich (D) (Mainteacher) born 1951, is director of the ISBC-Kiental. He studied biology with focus on genetics, molecular biology and ecology. He began to study natural self-healing methods during a serious illness in 1974/75. His first steps were massage, meditation and vegetarian nutrition. He then trained as a permaculture counselor and in creativity training as well as 'conflict resolving' therapy and psychosynthesis. His teachers for the biodynamic model of craniosacral therapy were Michael Shea and Franklyn Sills. In his own practice he combines acupuncture, homeopathy, and Craniosacral therapy. Today he sees his work as a way of encouraging self-healing to support people who are looking to heal themselves, and in teaching this gentle mode of biodynamic Craniosacral therapy.
