The Musicianship and Leadership Program (MLP-Europa)
Music improvisation as an experience and a path for personal development through single workshops and a 3-year training
with David Darling and European and American MLP-Teachers
Improvise? "I can't do that" is a common myth. Most people are inhibited, even blocked if they are asked to spontaneously express themselves through music. This unique training is intended for people of all different professional backgrounds and musical abilities. Anyone who wants to develop their love for music and their musical expression has come to the right place and is very welcome. You are also welcome if you only participate in single workshops.
Return to childhood - that is the natural, spontaneous and creative way to playfully learn music improvisation in a constructive and supportive atmosphere. With music we can express ourselves every day in ways that create harmony for the whole body and soul.
Music improvisation is a joyful and healthy form of communication that is available to all of us. Honestly expressed emotions are at the origin of every meaningful musical improvisation. The course is a real motivator that can be a lot of fun. This unusual training, under the leadership of the world-renowned music educator and improviser, David Darling, is designed for everyone interested in music. "There are no unmusical people, only perhaps those with less musical experience" is one of his slogans.
It is especially good for:
• Musicians who want to develop their improvisation skills (also classical musicians)
• Music teachers looking for new inspiration for their work with students
• Teachers of all subjects and levels as inspiration for group work
• Music, art and movement therapists
• Occupational therapists as an additional resource
• Music lovers as an evolution of their spontaneous access to music
No special prior musical training is required and all types of people participate. The reasons for participation are as varied as the participants themselves, through all are united in their intention to develop their abilities in musical expression and to applying what they have learned to other areas of life.
MLP History
The MLP Program has been in existence for 20 years. It grew out of the organization "Music for People" (MfP) and is based on a positive, democratic and humanistic worldview. Its intention is to vitalize all forms of music making in schools, communities, and concert halls. The participants are taught to bring out and emphasize the strength of their students and to give feedback in a very constructive manner. This supportive style of education is universally applicable. The first workshop for advanced "Music for People" improvisers was held in 1989. Here the participants had the opportunity to teach MfP techniques to a group. Out of this success came a 2-year MfP teachers program, which, in 1994, was expanded into what is now a 3-year MLP training.
MLP Goals
MLP has 3 main points of emphasis:
• Development of ones own musical improvisation skills
• Development of the ability to work with and lead groups
• Development of more self confidence
In addition, MLP strengthens ones abilities:
• To be "in the moment"
• To get where the other person is
• To listen deeply
• To express oneself creatively
Structure of the Training
The first year is primarily involved with learning the basic skills of music improvisation: pitch, melodies, rhythm, solo, duet, trio, quartet, music types and styles. Parallel to ones development of the basics there is plenty of small and large group play. You will play with your voice, percussion, piano, or any other instrument. One learns from the example of the experienced teachers and mentors and also receives feedback from them and fellow participants.
In the second training year students become mentors for new participants and lead the breakout groups. The mentors are supervised by experienced teachers and tutors.
In the third year the emphasis is on transferring MLP-technique to ones own field of work. Workshops outside of the training are held and documented. The feedback of the teachers and fellow participants furthers ones development. Questions about marketing and musical events are also addressed in the training content.
Upon successful completion, training participants receive a certificate as "Music for People Teacher"
"You cannot talk about music - you have to make it".
